The 53-year-old left Portugal after defeat to Spain in the last 16 of this summer's World Cup following the expiry of his contract and had been linked with the Hampden vacancy. His wife is Scottish, and the former Everton boss has revealed his love for his adopted homeland after spending time with Motherwell during his playing career.
Martinez, who was the joint favourite with oddsmakers for the Scotland job, appears to be zeroing in on becoming the new boss of the Netherlands after former Liverpool manager Arne Slot walked away from talks earlier this week. Talks ramped up on Wednesday night, with the KNVB keen on the former Toffees boss.
International Pedigree
The Spaniard has been operating at the summit of international football since 2016, when he was given the chance to lead Belgium's golden generation into four consecutive tournaments, though he was unable to secure a major tournament success. Martinez then managed Ronaldo in the twilight of his career with an enviable Portuguese squad at his disposal.
His potential appointment with the Netherlands would end Scotland's search for a new manager, with the vacancy at Hampden still open.
