Casemiro has reportedly advised Manchester United to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson as his replacement, with a decisive meeting scheduled for Tuesday. The Brazilian international is expected to join Michael Carrick's side in a deal worth up to £39 million.
Casemiro's contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the month after he bid farewell to supporters in May, ending his four-season spell. The former Real Madrid star struggled at times in the Premier League but played a key role in United's return to the Champions League.
Strengthening midfield was already a priority for Carrick, but Casemiro's exit has left the squad light in central options. Manuel Ugarte is also expected to depart, leaving Kobbie Mainoo with limited support beyond more attacking players like Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.
United may have to wait longer than expected for Ederson, however. The 26-year-old received a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad and has linked up with Casemiro under Carlo Ancelotti. The tournament's final takes place after United's first pre-season match, forcing a rethink of the timetable.
While United have agreed a four-year contract with an option for an extra year, Ederson still needs to undergo a medical and complete paperwork. A more likely timeframe would see these formalities completed after Brazil's World Cup campaign ends.
United's midfield revamp may not end with Ederson, as Newcastle's Sandro Tonali and West Ham's Mateus Fernandes have also been linked. The club view Fernandes as a 'highly realistic option' following West Ham's relegation, while a deal for Tonali could prove difficult due to Newcastle's £100 million price tag.
