Manchester United face a number of challenging decisions in 2027, with the squad requiring more reinforcements. Michael Carrick must welcome returning loanees, determine which players merit fresh contracts and assess whether some academy talents are prepared for senior action.
United captain Bruno Fernandes has reached the final 12 months of his existing contract, which includes a clause to extend it by an additional year. Fernandes is understood to be in discussions regarding a new deal that would establish him as the club's highest-paid player.
Contract expiry conundrums
Centre-halves Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are among those whose agreements conclude next summer, though both contracts feature a clause to extend for an additional year. United have recently concentrated their transfer activity on midfield, yet may seek to restructure the backline in the coming period.
Maguire has remained a mainstay of Carrick's defence and provides crucial experience to United's ranks. Nevertheless, he will reach 34 by season's end, and the club might opt to part ways rather than extend the England international's terms, with the likes of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven already competing for a regular berth.
Martinez is also an automatic selection when fit, though the Argentine has only once managed more than 20 league starts in a single season since his 2022 arrival. Should he be consistently available, United may choose to activate his extension clause. But another prolonged injury absence could cast doubt over his Old Trafford future. It is plausible both Maguire and Martinez leave as United refresh their options.
At left-back, the problematic position from the summer transfer window will resurface in 2027. Luke Shaw is approaching the final months of his deal and, unlike the previously mentioned stars, lacks an option to extend for an additional year.
The seasoned defender has featured regularly since overcoming his own fitness struggles, but the 31-year-old faces a gruelling campaign after United failed to recruit senior cover in his position. A contract renewal would enable United to continue benefiting from his experience in the near term while also avoiding the need to sign two new players for that role.
Promising left-back Harry Amass is also approaching the conclusion of his contract and remains on the periphery of the first team, despite a shortage of recognised alternatives. The 19-year-old pursuing regular minutes elsewhere might prove the optimal path for his career development, particularly given the club's recent attempts to secure left-back reinforcements.
Midfielders Jack and Tyler Fletcher are also approaching the final stages of their contracts, and the young pair face stiff competition for first-team places, though both still have time to stake their claim before the season draws to a close. Meanwhile, seasoned goalkeeper Tom Heaton is also set to become a free agent and may well call time on his playing career at the end of the campaign, at the age of 41.
Returning loanees
The only senior players United currently have out on loan are goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. Onana has embarked on a second temporary stint at Trabzonspor, with no buy option included in the agreement, and he looks unlikely to feature in Carrick's future plans.
Bayindir has headed to Celta Vigo, with the Spanish club holding the option to sign the goalkeeper permanently for £3.5million. Both stoppers will have a year remaining on their United deals once their respective loan spells conclude.
Young prospects Sekou Kone, Ethan Wheatley and Chido Obi are among the academy talents hoping to catch Carrick's eye during their temporary spells away from Old Trafford. With United's first-team squad notably short of natural strikers, an impressive goal return from either Obi or Wheatley could see them climb the ranks considerably.
Academy starlets
While the JJ Gabriel situation continues to rumble on, United will take heart from a number of other academy prospects who could be eyeing a more prominent role in the first-team set-up. Shea Lacey has already netted his maiden senior goal for the club against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.
The 19-year-old winger will hopefully continue to grow in confidence and impress Carrick enough to secure a regular place in the first-team setup. Noah Ajayi is two years younger than Lacey but is another highly-regarded prospect on the left flank, having recently put pen to paper on his first professional contract.
United forked out an initial £4m, plus a further £4m in add-ons, for Tottenham Hotspur youngster Tynan Thompson. The 18-year-old will be setting his sights on battling Marcus Rashford and Patrick Dorgu for a starting berth on the left wing.
