Joani Reid, the Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, has resigned the parliamentary whip after her husband, David Taylor, was arrested on suspicion of spying for China. Police confirmed on Thursday that Taylor, along with two other men, had been released on bail until May.
Reid voluntarily suspended herself from the whip while an internal Labour Party investigation takes place. A party spokesperson said she had agreed to fully cooperate with the inquiry.
In a statement, Reid described the week as 'the worst of my life' and stressed that she is not under police investigation. She added: 'I have done nothing wrong.' Reid also called for respect for her children's privacy.
Taylor, a former special adviser to Labour peer Peter Hain, was arrested by counter-terrorism officers at an address in London. He has also been suspended from the Labour Party pending investigation. Earthcott, the lobbying company where Taylor worked, is listed as a supporter of a Labour business group.
The arrests follow a separate case six months ago where charges against two men accused of spying for China were dropped. As part of the current investigation, police raided homes in Wales, including that of journalist Martin Shipton, whose devices were seized.
