Kristi Noem has been ousted as Secretary of Homeland Security, making history as the first Cabinet member fired in Donald Trump's second term. The decision came after a contentious Senate hearing where the Louisiana senator John Kennedy, a Trump ally, described the president as 'mad as a murder hornet' over Noem's performance.
The final nail in the coffin was Noem's combative testimony, during which she claimed Trump approved a multimillion-dollar ad campaign—a claim that reportedly incensed the president and prompted a public denial. She also refused to apologize for falsely labeling two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, as domestic terrorists after they were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis.
Noem's tenure was marred by multiple failures, including mismanagement of staff, allegations of an improper relationship with her top adviser, and constant feuding with other agency heads. An administration official cited the fallout in Minnesota, the ad campaign, infidelity allegations, and staff mismanagement as reasons for her dismissal.
Despite once being considered as Trump's running mate, Noem's admission in a memoir of shooting her own puppy initially seemed to endear her to Trump, who viewed it as 'an asset.' However, the dog killing resurfaced during hearings and proved to be the final straw. Noem will now serve as special envoy for 'The Shield of the Americas,' while Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin has been tapped to replace her.
