Kristi Noem was publicly replaced as US Homeland Security Secretary on Thursday while she was speaking at a conference in Nashville. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Noem would be leaving the role to become Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, a newly created position.
Trump named Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin, whom he described as a “MAGA Warrior” and an undefeated professional MMA fighter, as Noem’s successor. The timing of the announcement was particularly awkward, as Noem was on stage when the news broke. Reports indicate she was informed of the change by phone shortly before the event.
Despite the abrupt announcement, a later statement confirmed that Noem would remain in her role until the end of March. Her tenure had been marked by controversy, including her admission to killing a puppy and persistent rumours of an affair with top aide Corey Lewandowski. Senator Thom Tillis had recently compared her leadership of ICE to the dog-shooting incident, calling it a “precipitous, emotionally based decision.”
Noem’s new role, Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, has drawn scepticism. Critics, including former vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, welcomed her departure, with Walz stating that Noem had done “a stunning amount of damage”. The nature of the envoy position remains unclear, with speculation it may involve regional security or public relations tasks.
