The former Newcastle striker spoke out on BBC Breakfast, calling the online abuse 'so sad and ridiculous'.
Shearer expressed disappointment at the result but urged the nation to be proud of Gareth Southgate's team for reaching their first major final in decades. He highlighted the positive aspects of social media, such as players showcasing their personalities, but condemned the negative side that led to abuse of those who missed penalties.
The Football Association also released a statement strongly condemning the discrimination and vowing to support the affected players while urging the toughest punishments for those responsible. BBC presenters Dan Walker and Louise Minchin echoed Shearer's sentiments, with Walker urging abusers to 'have a hard long look at themselves'.
