Kamala Harris has said she currently has no desire to re-enter American politics, describing the system as 'broken'. The former vice-president and Democratic presidential nominee made the remarks in her first interview since losing the 2024 election to Donald Trump, appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Harris, who announced she would not run for California governor a day earlier, told Colbert: 'Recently I made the decision that I just – for now – I don't want to go back in the system. I think it's broken.' The comment drew groans from the studio audience. She added: 'I always believed that as fragile as our democracy is, our systems would be strong enough to defend our most fundamental principles. And I think right now that they're not as strong as they need to be.'
Harris lamented what she called the 'capitulation' of many who she said should be guardians of democracy in the face of Trump's aggressive second term. When Colbert invited her to say 'I told you so' over her predictions of Medicaid cuts, ignoring court orders and tax cuts for the rich, she replied: 'But Stephen, what I did not predict was the capitulation.'
The interview was also used to promote her forthcoming book, '107 Days', which recounts her abbreviated presidential campaign. Harris said she plans to 'travel the country and listen to people' rather than immediately seek office, leaving the door open for a potential 2028 White House bid.
