Julian Alvarez has reportedly expressed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, with Arsenal among the clubs said to be interested in the former Manchester City striker. The development follows the rejection of a swap deal involving Barcelona's Ferran Torres.
Alvarez's Stance
According to Spanish outlet Cadena SER, the 26-year-old forward has indicated his wish to move on, triggering a scramble among Europe's elite clubs. Barcelona had approached their La Liga rivals with an offer of Ferran Torres plus cash, but Atletico swiftly turned it down.
Diego Simeone's side are reportedly demanding a substantial fee for the Premier League and World Cup winner. Atletico are already making plans for next season, with Alvarez at the centre of discussions amid significant interest from elsewhere.
Manager's Comments
Simeone said: "It's not a question for me, it's a question for Julián. It's his decision, and he'll have to make it."
Atletico endured a deflating conclusion to their campaign after a heavy 5-1 defeat to Villarreal, though they secured fourth spot.
Arsenal's Interest
A report from The Guardian last week indicated that Mikel Arteta will have access to significant funds as Arsenal seek to build a dynasty following their first Premier League title triumph in two decades. Arteta has made a new forward his top priority, with Alvarez among the targets.
The Gunners reached the summit of English football comfortably, with their victory confirmed before the final day after Manchester City dropped points at Bournemouth. They finished the season with a 2-1 win and could add a European Cup to their haul.
Arteta's Reaction
Arteta said: "It's very difficult to put it into words, but what a moment. A lot of emotions, a lot of joy, pride. I think the manner in which it was done represents what these guys are feeling and the reason why this magic happened."
He added: "We have accomplished a lot of things that have a lot of value. But at the end of the day, we are here to win major trophies. That was the ultimate goal and we were very close. On these three occasions, we fell short, and that was very painful. But I think that's what has driven all of us to find new ways to show what we are made of."
Atletico's Rebuild
Sporting director Mateu Alemany is overseeing the next phase of progress at the Wanda Metropolitano. Alvarez's departure could provide significant funds for a rebuild, with Antoine Griezmann also exiting the club.
