Newcastle United will begin their 2026/27 Premier League campaign against Liverpool with a new head coach, Matthias Jaissle, in the dugout.
Who is Matthias Jaissle?
Jaissle is Newcastle's newest head coach. The German previously managed at Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli before arriving at St James' Park this summer from Saudi Arabia to take over from Eddie Howe.
Why did Eddie Howe leave Newcastle?
Howe parted ways with Newcastle by mutual consent in July, stating that time was needed to "recharge and take a break." Reports cited the departures of key players in recent seasons as a reason behind Howe's decision to resign.
When Howe stepped down, his backroom team left Newcastle as well. This included Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone and Dan Hodges.
Other departures and arrivals
This summer, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes have all left Newcastle. Tonali and Guimaraes have joined Tottenham and Arsenal, respectively, while Gordon signed for Barcelona, and Trippier moved to the Championship to play for Wolves.
So far, Jaissle has made only one senior signing: Amar Dedic, who joined from Benfica for £29.5m.
