Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has said the Magpies will be 'selective' in the final two days of the transfer window, following a 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur that marked his first win in charge.
The German coach expects Newcastle to be active in the closing hours of the trading period. Record signing Nick Woltemade, who arrived for £69m, has been linked with a loan move to Juventus or Napoli, but Jaissle appeared to play down the likelihood of his departure before Tuesday's deadline.
Jaissle dismisses transfer rumours
Speaking to Chronicle Live, Jaissle said: "I am not a coach who will take part in media rumours. Nick is a part of the squad, we have a strong squad and we want to be selective in the transfer market with a couple of days left."
Newcastle still have funds available after completing a £50m move for Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City last week, but Jaissle did not rule out further signings. He added: "We are realistic. We have high ambitions and we know what is needed, but the squad is strong. We saw that today, but there are still a couple of days left, and we can then talk again."
No panic in the market
Asked whether taking four points from six and climbing to third in the Premier League table represented a start that might encourage more spending, Jaissle replied: "That's a good question. There's always pros and cons. We know our needs. Ross Wilson is doing an amazing job."
He continued: "We have a couple of days left and will not panic and do something crazy without everyone believing it's the right decision. That's the most important thing, on a management and leadership level, that we're all aligned."
First win secured
Newcastle had reached the hour mark without a shot on target, but goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa secured all three points. Reflecting on the victory, Jaissle said: "We're really pleased, not only because of the goals we scored but because of the performance and how we improved during the match."
He added: "That should give us confidence to be able to adjust things and that's what the lads showed, especially in the second half. It was really good in all phases. We controlled the transitions much better, so I think in the end it was a well-deserved win."
