Irish Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has claimed that ongoing fuel protests in Ireland are being manipulated by outside actors, including British right-wing activist Tommy Robinson. Speaking on Thursday, O'Callaghan stated that online observations show many external figures are seeking to exploit the demonstrators for their own purposes.
The protests, which began on Tuesday, have seen roads and fuel depots blockaded across the country. The government has confirmed that the army will be called in to remove heavy vehicles obstructing critical infrastructure. O'Callaghan said the protests have gone on too long and that the government has heard the protesters' point.
O'Callaghan specifically cited Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, as referring to and relying upon the protests to advance his own political measures. He acknowledged that the overwhelming majority of protesters do not want to be associated with Robinson.
The minister warned of legal consequences for those involved, noting that driving licences could be affected and insurance coverage may be void. He said the government is considering its response to rising fuel prices on an ongoing basis but cannot be held to ransom by a group of unelected people.
