Gilruth Set as Deputy First Minister by Swinney

Jenny Gilruth is set to be appointed as Scotland's Deputy First Minister by John Swinney, the Press Association understands. The current Education Secretary was the first to arrive at Bute House on Wednesday as the First Minister assembles his top team.

New Role for Gilruth

It is understood the former teacher will not continue as education secretary, though her new portfolio alongside the deputy role remains unclear. She replaces Kate Forbes, who left Holyrood at this month's election, and was chosen ahead of other candidates such as Housing Secretary Mairi McAllan.

Swinney Sworn In

The First Minister was sworn in for a second time on Wednesday morning at the Court of Session, accompanied by his wife Elizabeth and son Matthew. Speaking afterward, Swinney said he would be a "First Minister for all of Scotland."

He described the ceremony as "deeply precious" and a reminder of his responsibilities. His top priorities include tackling the cost of living, improving the NHS, and giving Scots a chance to decide their constitutional future.

Cabinet Reshuffle

Swinney was elected First Minister for a second time on Tuesday after the SNP won 58 seats in the election. He faces filling gaps left by retiring ministers, including Forbes, finance secretary Shona Robison, and culture secretary Angus Robertson, who lost his seat.

New talent may include former MPs Stephen Flynn, Stephen Gethins, and Alison Thewliss. Cabinet appointments will face a confirmatory vote in Holyrood on Thursday.
