Georgia Republican's AI Campaign Ad Depicts Sharia Law Invasion, Ignites Controversy
A Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor in Georgia has unleashed a political firestorm by sharing a controversial campaign advertisement generated through artificial intelligence that portrays the state being overrun by what he describes as 'Sharia law'. State Senator Greg Dolezal posted the provocative video on Tuesday, triggering immediate backlash and accusations of blatant Islamophobia from political opponents and community leaders.
AI-Generated Imagery Shows Extreme Scenarios
The artificially created video presents a series of alarming scenes designed to evoke fear about Islamic influence. It opens with two women wearing hijabs entering a state government building, followed by a dramatic sequence where a man dressed entirely in black breaks into a private home to violently slash an Easter cake with a machete. Another segment shows a woman resembling actress Claire Danes being informed by a man in traditional Islamic attire that she cannot drive a vehicle, though there is no indication the actual actress was involved in the advertisement's creation.
The video escalates further with imagery of Muslim men firing weapons and imposing black military tanks rolling through what appears to be a peaceful suburban Georgia neighborhood. These manufactured scenarios culminate with an AI-generated woman wearing a hijab appearing on screen alongside the bold declaration: 'Keep Georgia Sharia Free'.
Dolezal's Provocative Accompanying Message
In the caption accompanying the video, Dolezal wrote: 'London has fallen. Europe is under siege.' He continued with a stark warning: 'In America, the invaders who would rather pillage our generosity than assimilate are roaming Minnesota, New York, and LA. As Lt Governor, I will fight the enemy before they're within the gates and keep Georgia safe and Sharia free.'
The state senator, who represents District 27 covering parts of Forsyth County and has served in Georgia's legislature since 2018, describes himself on social media as: 'Father. Husband. Entrepreneur. State Senator. Trump Conservative running for Lt Governor of Georgia.' He has positioned himself firmly within the MAGA Republican movement and is one of eight Republicans competing for the Lieutenant Governor position, as current officeholder Burt Jones seeks the governorship.
Immediate Backlash and Accusations of Bigotry
The advertisement spread rapidly across digital platforms, drawing polarized reactions. While some supporters praised what they perceived as humorous political commentary, numerous critics condemned the video as racially and religiously inflammatory.
One commenter expressed: 'This is disgusting. People wonder why I became a Democrat, it’s because of the inexcusable hatred spewed by many Republicans like Greg Dolezal. Hate, including Islamophobia, has no place in Georgia.' Another stated: 'As a Jewish Georgian, I find this ad blatantly Islamophobic and deeply disgraceful.'
A particularly detailed critique noted: 'Greg Dolezal used AI-generated imagery to fabricate a fake invasion scenario, depict Muslim-coded people as violent enemies, and tell Georgians to fear “Sharia.” That is not leadership. It is religious scapegoating. I know what it looks like when politicians and demagogues single out a religious minority and portray them as a threat to society. Muslims are not “the enemy,” and Georgians should reject this kind of bigotry outright.'
Religious condemnation also emerged, with one comment reading: 'As a Christian man who deeply loves Georgia, I pray you never become Lt Governor. This is deeply racist, and sinful. May God have mercy on your soul.'
Official Political Condemnation
Senate Minority Leader Harold Jones II issued a formal statement alongside Senate Democrats, denouncing Dolezal's advertisement as 'racist AI slop.' The statement declared: 'At a time our nation should be coming together Senator Dolezal decided to release a racist video to try to gain the attention of Donald Trump.'
Jones characterized the video as representing 'the lowest form of politics' and demanded that Dolezal issue a public apology for what he called a 'racist, nonsensical video.' The minority leader went further by calling for Dolezal to withdraw from the Lieutenant Governor race entirely, asserting that the senator lacks the necessary self-control and judgment to lead the Georgia State Senate.
Dolezal's Political Platform and Context
Dolezal announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor in September, campaigning on a platform that includes banning transgender athletes from participating on sports teams aligned with their gender identity, eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across state institutions, and continuing efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. He has previously criticized fellow Republicans who declined to support election challenges, telling the Georgia Recorder last September: 'In 2020, when President Trump needed allies, these politicians were silent.'
The controversial advertisement emerges against a backdrop of increasing Islamophobia across the United States. According to data from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, discrimination incidents targeting Muslims reached a new high in 2024, with over 8,000 documented cases reported last year alone.
The Daily Mail has contacted Senator Dolezal's campaign for comment regarding the widespread criticism of his advertisement, but no response has been publicly disclosed at this time. The incident highlights growing concerns about the ethical use of artificial intelligence in political campaigning and the potential for such technology to amplify divisive rhetoric during election cycles.
