Bruno Fernandes praised Jonny Evans for his role in planning Manchester United's set-piece goal against Brighton on Sunday. Patrick Dorgu opened the scoring by heading home Fernandes' corner, giving the Portuguese midfielder his 21st Premier League assist of the season, a new record.
The assist broke the previous mark of 20, jointly held by Fernandes himself, Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Fernandes was mobbed by teammates after the goal, and later scored himself in a 3-0 victory, with Dorgu providing the assist.
Speaking after the match, Fernandes said: 'It's great. I feel very happy for that. Very proud moment. Jonny believed more than me in that set-piece we prepared for Patrick because I was not so sure he would be able to score with his head.'
Fernandes acknowledged the company he now keeps: 'It was already special being in their company. We are talking about two players that made the Premier League so great.' He added that his creative style has not changed, but his teammates have scored more goals.
On manager Michael Carrick, who has been appointed permanently, Fernandes said: 'It is a very important step for our club. We need stability. He knows the club, what it means and what it demands.'
