Ex-Premier League Managers Postecoglou and Frank Join World Cup Punditry Teams
Ex-PL Managers Postecoglou and Frank Join World Cup Punditry

Former Tottenham Hotspur managers Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank are set to go head-to-head as pundits for rival broadcasters during the 2026 World Cup. The BBC and ITV are finalising their expert panels for the tournament, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

BBC's Punditry Line-Up

The BBC has recruited Thomas Frank, who was dismissed by Tottenham in February, as one of its main analysts. He will be joined by football luminaries including Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer, and Joe Hart. Additionally, former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has been brought on board as a new addition to the Beeb's team.

ITV's Punditry Line-Up

ITV, meanwhile, has secured the services of Ange Postecoglou, who replaced Frank at Spurs last summer. The ITV panel features notable names such as Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Ian Wright, and ex-Premier League winger Andros Townsend.

Managerial Records and Reactions

Tottenham supporters will observe that while Postecoglou has spoken extensively about his tenure in North London, Frank has yet to publicly address his sacking. Frank's win rate of 34.2 per cent is the poorest of any permanent manager in Spurs' history. His successor, Igor Tudor, did not fare significantly better, losing five of his seven matches before Roberto De Zerbi took over last month. Postecoglou, after leaving Spurs, joined Nottingham Forest in September but lasted only 39 days before being dismissed.

Broadcast Rights and Coverage Plans

ITV will broadcast England's opening match against Croatia on Wednesday, June 17 at 9pm, as well as their third group-stage fixture against Panama on Saturday, June 27 at 10pm. The BBC holds the rights to England's second group match against Ghana on Tuesday, June 23 at 9pm. The BBC will have first pick for England's potential last-32, last-16, and semi-final matches, while ITV will have priority for a possible quarter-final. Both broadcasters will air the final separately.

Studio Locations and Presenters

ITV has set up a studio in Brooklyn, New York, for the duration of the tournament, with Mark Pougatch and Laura Woods serving as lead presenters. In contrast, the BBC will remain at its Salford base until the quarter-final stage, with Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates hosting. The BBC's decision is reportedly driven by financial and environmental considerations.

Former BBC presenter Gary Lineker, who was originally scheduled to front the network's World Cup coverage before his early departure, has criticised the approach. Lineker, who will instead work for Netflix, commented: "This World Cup will be different because of all the other ones I've done at the BBC. I would have been in Salford in the green box, and now I'm in New York City, at Times Square. This will be exciting and something very different but still very similar to the podcast."
