Controversy and withdrawals
This year's competition has sparked as much debate as ever, following the withdrawal of five nations – including Big Five member Italy – after Israel's participation was confirmed. In 2025, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia announced they would sit out the contest in response to Israel's continued military operations in Gaza. Controversy aside, Israel and nine other countries successfully advanced from the first semi-final earlier this week. The acts progressing to the grand final include Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Israel, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Serbia and Sweden.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 grand finale broadcasts on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Saturday, May 16.
