A new study has revealed the UK's best-connected cities for public transport, with Edinburgh claiming the top spot, followed by Glasgow and Reading. The research, conducted by Karas Plating, evaluated 36 locations using a weighted scoring system that considered transport connectivity (40%), international connectivity (30%), and digital and economic connectivity (30%).
How the Rankings Were Determined
The analysis assessed factors such as bus and rail stops per capita, airport accessibility and journey times, European flight connections, broadband speeds, 5G coverage, availability of coworking spaces, and affordability measured by cost of living against income.
Top 10 UK Cities with the Best Connectivity
- Edinburgh – Scotland's capital excels across multiple criteria, leading in bus stops (26.61 per 10,000 residents), bike commuters (10%), and links to other major cities. It also boasts extensive international access, download speeds of 223.68 Mbps, and 99.4% 5G coverage.
- Glasgow – Glasgow secures second place with 31.92 bus stops per 10,000 residents, the fastest airport access at just 20 minutes, and broadband speeds of 221.56 Mbps.
- Reading – Technically a large town, Reading ranks third due to its impressive international connectivity, topping the table for European destinations per capita (10.63) and cost of living versus income (25.00).
- London – The capital takes fourth place with the highest metro density (0.306 stops per 10,000 people), nine links to other cities, and full 5G coverage, though a high cost of living ratio (58.93) affects its position.
- Bristol – Fifth-placed Bristol balances strong transport links with digital accessibility, ranking second for coworking spaces (1.95 per 10,000 people) and enjoying complete 5G coverage.
- Chester – Chester lands sixth, driven by exceptional transport density, including 138.19 bus stops per 10,000 people and strong European connectivity (7.91 destinations per capita).
- Southampton – Seventh-placed Southampton offers one of the fastest airport connections at 18 minutes and strong affordability, ranking second for cost of living versus income (40.45).
- Cardiff – The Welsh capital secures eighth place with 34.33 bus stops per 10,000 residents, complete 5G coverage, and the strongest affordability score (36.64) in the study.
- Worcester – Worcester claims ninth spot thanks to exceptional bus infrastructure, topping the study with 230.50 stops per 10,000 people, backed by broadband speeds of 151.74 Mbps and full 5G coverage.
- Blackpool – Rounding out the top 10, Blackpool benefits from strong transport links, including 1.631 metro stops per 10,000 people, and a low cost of living ratio of 25.00, though broadband speeds of 100.60 Mbps are a disadvantage.
The findings highlight the importance of connectivity in modern life, with several unexpected entries making the list.
