A father in Selby, North Yorkshire, killed one of six masked intruders who broke into his home and attacked him with a crowbar in March 2022. The man, who has not been named, acted in self-defence to protect his partner and two young children.
The gang, armed with weapons and wearing dark clothing and balaclavas, forced their way into the house and began beating the homeowner with fists and a crowbar. During the struggle, the man grabbed a knife and stabbed one of the intruders, who later died at the scene despite attempts by the homeowner and emergency services to save him.
North Yorkshire Police launched a major investigation, using CCTV, telecommunications analysis, and forensic evidence to identify and arrest all five surviving intruders within 48 hours. The homeowner faced no charges, as his actions were deemed lawful self-defence.
The five men were convicted of aggravated burglary in July 2025. At Leeds Crown Court, Jackson and Welford received 13-year sentences, Richardson and Hall were jailed for 11 years and four months, and Hunt was sentenced to 19 years with an extended five-year licence as a dangerous offender. The total prison terms amount to 70 years.
Detective Sergeant Jon Kenworthy of North Yorkshire Police praised the investigation, calling it a “pre-meditated, violent and distressing attack” on a family at home with young children. Several officers received a Judge’s Commendation for their work.
