Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana have unveiled draft constitution plans for their new political movement, Your Party, including a leadership contest to be held by March 2026. The proposals, seen by the Guardian, aim to transform the 'post-Labour left' into a formal political force with a 'democratic revolution' in party governance.
The blueprint outlines a one-member one-vote system to elect a leader or co-leaders, with a 21-member central executive committee (CEC) dominated by ordinary members. Sixteen seats would be directly elected, with two reserved for MPs who would be barred from chairing. The leader's term would be capped at 21 months, keeping the founding team in place until late 2027 unless members decide otherwise.
If approved at a founding conference in Liverpool on 29-30 November, the party would become Britain's first major left-wing party in a generation, with formal rules and internal elections. The official name is expected to be confirmed within weeks, with members voting on it before the conference. Corbyn and Sultana are steering the process but will have no guaranteed leadership role once members vote next year.
The constitution includes a digital democracy process allowing members to submit edits online, with delegates chosen by sortition to vote on amendments at the conference. Recall clauses would allow elected officers to be removed midterm if they lose confidence, and strict procedures aim to ensure democratic candidate selection, addressing criticisms of Labour's vetting under current leadership.
The draft follows months of internal tensions, including Sultana's premature announcement in July and a dispute over a membership email drive that led to complaints about data handling. Both Corbyn and Sultana have said the rift is resolved, with Sultana comparing their dynamic to the Gallagher brothers.
