Church of England Leader Stands with Pope in Peace Advocacy
Dame Sarah Mullally, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has expressed solidarity with Pope Leo XIV following the Pontiff's forceful condemnation of global tyrants and his advocacy for peace. This comes amid a heated exchange with former US President Donald Trump, who has criticised the Pope's political stance.
Archbishop's Support for Papal Message
Dame Sarah Mullally, who is scheduled to meet Pope Leo later this month in Rome, praised his courageous call for a kingdom of peace. In a statement, she urged political leaders to pursue all possible peaceful and just means to resolve conflicts. I stand with my brother in Christ, His Holiness Pope XIV, in his courageous call for a kingdom of peace, she declared.
The Archbishop emphasised the devastating human cost of war, noting that innocent lives are lost, families torn apart, and futures destroyed. She called it the duty of every Christian, and all people of faith and goodwill, to work and pray for peace. We must also urge all those entrusted with political authority to pursue every possible peaceful and just means of resolving conflict, she added.
Pope's Forceful Remarks in Cameroon
Pope Leo XIV made unusually strong comments during a visit to Cameroon, a region plagued by separatist insurgency for nearly a decade. Speaking at Saint Joseph's Cathedral in Bamenda, he decried leaders who exploit religion to justify wars and condemned an endless cycle of destabilisation and death.
Those who rob your land of its resources generally invest much of the profit in weapons, the Pope stated, highlighting how this perpetuates violence. He criticised the masters of war for ignoring that destruction takes moments while rebuilding requires lifetimes, and for allocating billions to warfare while neglecting healing, education, and restoration.
Trump's Fiery Response and Controversy
Donald Trump responded with a scathing rant on Truth Social, branding the Pope as weak and demanding he focus on religious duties rather than politics. Trump called Leo a very liberal person, weak on crime, and terrible for foreign policy, suggesting his papacy was due to his American nationality.
Trump further sparked controversy by posting an AI-generated image that appeared to depict himself as Jesus Christ, leading to backlash even among his supporters. He later claimed the image represented him as a doctor making people better, not as a divine figure.
Ongoing Feud and Peace Advocacy
The conflict stems from Pope Leo's repeated criticism of the war in Iran and his Easter message urging weapon holders to lay down arms. The Pope has vowed to continue speaking out against war, promoting peace, dialogue, and multilateral solutions. I will continue to speak out loudly against war, looking to promote peace, he told Reuters, adding that too many innocent people are suffering.
In a veiled dig at Trump's administration, the Pope warned against manipulating religion for military, economic, and political gain, calling it an exploitation that must be rejected by every honest conscience. He has condemned the war in Iran as causing absurd and inhuman violence, and criticised Trump's threats against Iran as truly unacceptable.
As the Archbishop of Canterbury aligns with the Pope's peace efforts, this episode underscores the growing tension between religious leadership and political figures over global conflict resolution.
