Michael Carrick says Marcus Rashford is 'our player' and Kobbie Mainoo is ready for a big season, as he spoke to Manchester United reporters for the first time this summer during an interview at Carton House on Thursday.
Pre-season and squad progress
Carrick said the group is in a 'really good spot' after making improvements towards the end of last season, with younger players returning more experienced. He added that the squad has a good balance, and they are ready for the new season.
On the transfer window, Carrick said they are 'delighted' with the players brought in, having improved the squad in balance and quality, but stressed they always want more and will keep pushing.
Rashford's future and Mainoo's World Cup
Asked about Marcus Rashford, Carrick said they treat him 'like anybody else' and that he has come back in good form. He said Rashford is 'our player' and a 'very good player' who can offer so much, adding that he is not for sale as far as he is concerned.
On Kobbie Mainoo not playing at the World Cup, Carrick said he spoke to him throughout the tournament and that it was a good experience for him. He said Mainoo has come back in 'great spirits' and is 'ready for a big season'.
Title ambitions and transfer plans
Carrick said the players' belief that they can challenge for the title puts them in a good place, and that they have the potential to achieve something special, but he would not make any crazy predictions.
He said they would like more signings, with one or two areas to improve, but would not throw out any numbers. He confirmed constant communication with the club about strengthening.
On competing with clubs spending £100m, Carrick said 'money's money' and it's still about the football, but they need to push everything to win again.
