Andy Burnham has reiterated his desire for the United Kingdom to rejoin the European Union within his lifetime, suggesting the policy could be included in the next Labour manifesto. The Prime Minister, however, ruled out a snap election on the issue.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Mr Burnham said, "In my lifetime I would like to see that happen," but added he was "not going to move ahead of the public." The comments follow his pledge not to re-run the Brexit debate during his campaign for the Makerfield by-election, despite repeatedly commenting on closer alignment with the bloc.
Summit with Eurocrats
Mr Burnham is due to attend a summit with European leaders next month, where he has suggested that nothing is "off the table" in those talks. When asked by hosts whether he planned to rejoin soon, he retorted that he was "not proposing any changes in this Parliament" that would see the UK return to Brussels.
Speaking last year, Mr Burnham said he wanted the UK back in the EU, a view he shared again this morning in a news interview.
