Budget 2025: £100 winter payment and gas standing charges scrapped

Chancellor John Healey's Budget will give a £100 winter payment to 20 million households and scrap standing charges on gas bills, while savers, renters and landlords face higher costs.

Winter payment and gas charges

The £100 winter payment for 20 million households grabbed the headlines, while many will benefit from the scrapping of standing charges on gas bills.

Savers, renters and landlords affected

But savers will take a hit from higher taxes, while renters and landlords also face higher costs.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today, the Chancellor said the Government “can never remove completely the cost-of-living pressures that people feel”.

He continued: “We can help where we can and that’s what I’m doing with creating a bit of breathing space for these households.”
