A woman in her 40s has died after a Land Rover ploughed into a group of pedestrians outside a pub in Wigan. The incident occurred at around 9.20pm on Friday outside the Fifteens pub on Ormskirk Road in Pemberton. Two men were also seriously injured in the collision.
Witnesses reported seeing two men jump out of the car after it hit the pedestrians and a wall. Passers-by chased them and pinned one to the ground until police arrived. Greater Manchester Police later arrested two men on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Floral tributes have been left at the scene, with one message reading: "A beautiful soul taken too soon. Thinking of you and your family at this unbelievably sad time." Another tribute said: "RIP sweetheart. Thinking of you and all your family and friends. No-one deserves to go out for a night out and not go home. Heartbroken, all our love."
Pub owner Tony Callaghan described the incident as "a very tragic incident," adding that customers and staff rushed to help the injured. He said the woman was visiting family for the weekend and was not from the area.
Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for anyone with dash-cam footage or information to come forward. PC Oliver Batty from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "Our thoughts are with the woman’s family who are understandably devastated. We’re keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a silver Land Rover Freelander in the area in the minutes leading up to the incident."
