Millions of Australian workers will soon be able to claim an instant tax deduction of up to $1,000 for work-related expenses without needing to keep receipts. The draft legislation for the policy, proposed by Treasurer Jim Chalmers, was released on Monday, just over a year after Labor first floated the idea ahead of the 2025 election.
Under the new law, employees can automatically deduct up to $1,000 in work-related costs, effectively providing a small weekly tax break. The measure aims to simplify the tax filing process and reduce the burden of record-keeping for millions of Australians.
The policy is expected to benefit a wide range of workers, particularly those with modest work-related expenses. However, critics argue that the $1,000 cap translates to only a few dollars per week in actual tax savings, depending on an individual's marginal tax rate.
