Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has stated he has "every reason to believe" he will be in charge of the club next season, despite growing discontent among supporters following a disappointing campaign. The Dutchman, who led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, has faced increasing criticism as the team's title defence faltered, losing 11 matches and needing a win from their final two games to secure Champions League football.
Slot's Position Backed by Club Hierarchy
Despite the adverse reaction from some fans, the club's hierarchy has never indicated they are considering replacing Slot this summer. "I don't think I am deciding that alone by myself but I have every reason to believe I am the Liverpool manager next season," Slot said. "First of all, I am contracted to this club and second of all from all the talks we are having. That is my take on it."
Criticism and Fan Reaction
Slot acknowledged that criticism is normal after a subpar season, especially compared to the previous campaign. "If you compare it with last season, this has definitely not been a great season, then it is also normal that criticism comes," he added. Dissatisfaction with Slot intensified during last weekend's home draw against Chelsea, a team that had lost six consecutive league matches. Slot's decision to substitute 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha was met with boos, though the coach explained it was due to fitness concerns. Further jeers followed at the final whistle as the chance to secure a Champions League spot slipped away.
Slot's Perspective on Modern Football
Slot reflected on the nature of criticism in modern football, stating: "I think the world has gone to if a manager or a club doesn't have their best season there is always a debate about that – it is not only Liverpool, it is all around the world. That is the new reality in football." He emphasised that fans have every right to their opinions, noting that such discussions have always occurred but are now more public.
Plans for Next Season
Slot expressed confidence in his position, revealing that the club has already made plans for the upcoming season. "We know where we go on tour, so our plans have been made and talks have been ongoing between the club and new players and I am involved in that," he said. Regarding player fitness, Slot confirmed that Mohamed Salah is set to return from a hamstring problem for the penultimate game of his Liverpool career, but will only be available for limited minutes. Playmaker Florian Wirtz continues to struggle with a stomach infection.
