Andy Burnham's Life: Blind Date Wife, Wild Rumours, and PM Bid
Andy Burnham: Blind Date Wife, Rumours, and PM Bid

As the Labour civil war continues to intensify, all eyes are on Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester Mayor who may soon vie for the top job for the third time. The Mirror takes a closer look at his life, from his modest upbringing to his political rise and personal controversies.

Modest Upbringing

Born in Liverpool to a BT engineer father and a GP receptionist mother, Burnham's family moved to the Cheshire village of Culcheth after his father secured a new job in Manchester. He attended St Lewis Catholic Primary School and St Aelred's Roman Catholic High School in Newton-le-Willows. An ardent Everton FC supporter, the sporty middle son also showed promise as a bowler for Lancashire Schoolboys. Music was another passion, especially The Smiths and The Stone Roses.

In his 2024 book, Burnham reflected: "It was hard to be both a good student and one of the lads." However, his proud father Roy always knew his clever son was "destined for better things." Speaking to The Liverpool Echo in 2010, Roy said: "He has always been driven. He mixed a lot. He played a lot of sport and was popular when he was younger. But he was rigid in his studies."

University Struggles

A straight-A student, Burnham initially considered studying Spanish but was inspired by an English teacher to apply to Cambridge. He said: "Steve Harrington, amazing man, I'm still in touch with him... He boosted my confidence at a time when I didn't and wouldn't have thought I could go to Cambridge." However, Burnham struggled to feel part of things at Cambridge, finding his identity in the Mancunian music scene.

Blind Date Wife

At Cambridge, Burnham met his wife, Marie-France van Heel, known as Frankie. A professional marketing executive originally from the Netherlands, Frankie once appeared on the dating show Blind Date with Burnham's permission. She did not hit it off with her date, Will from Surrey, and threw a cushion at him on set. The couple married in October 2000 and have three children: Jimmy, Rosie, and Annie.

Burnham has spoken about the challenges of balancing his career and family life, saying: "It's very hard to spend time away from the family. I just hope the dysfunctional side of the job doesn't put my children off what I do."

Rise and Bids for Leadership

After graduation, Burnham worked as an unpaid intern at the Middleton Guardian, then for trade magazines, and later as a researcher for Labour minister Tessa Jowell. He was elected MP for Leigh in 2001 and rose to become Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Culture Secretary, and Health Secretary under Gordon Brown. He launched a campaign leading to the second Hillsborough inquiry.

Burnham made his first bid for Labour leadership in 2010, losing to Ed Miliband. He ran again in 2015, coming second to Jeremy Corbyn with 19% of the vote. He served briefly as Shadow Home Secretary before being elected Manchester Mayor in 2016. In May 2021, he suggested he was still considering a leadership bid, saying the party should "get in touch" if it "ever to feel it needed me."

Voting Record

According to They Work For You, Burnham has generally voted against reducing central government funding for local government and almost always voted against restrictions on campaigning by third parties. He has consistently voted for LGBT+ rights and social equality, the hunting ban, and replacing Trident with a new nuclear weapons system. He consistently voted for the Iraq war and against investigations into it. On university tuition fees, he voted against raising the cap to £9,000 in 2010.

Speeding Fine

In March 2023, Burnham was fined £2,000 for driving at 78 mph on a 40 mph stretch of the M62 motorway. He accepted he was "going too fast" but said he was unaware of the variable speed limit due to a recently closed junction.

'King of the North'

As mayor, Burnham has championed the North West, bringing buses back under public control and nearly halving rough sleeping. He donates 15% of his annual salary to a homelessness fund. In 2020, he stood up to Whitehall during the pandemic, delivering a rousing speech that earned him the nickname 'King of the North'. He said: "What we've seen today is a deliberate act of levelling down."

Burnham's daughters have had to deal with rumours of him wearing mascara or hair dye, and the notion of their dad as a 'sex symbol'. He said: "I just want all that stuff to pass."

Salary and Home

As mayor, Burnham earns £118,267 annually. He lives in Leigh, Greater Manchester, with his wife and three children. He has outlined his 'Burnhamism' politics as "aspirational socialism," calling for public control of housing, energy, water, and rail, and to "get back to speaking to working-class ambition."

Blocked from Running

In January 2026, Burnham applied to stand as Labour's candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election but was blocked by the party's NEC in an 8-1 vote. Labour cited avoiding an unnecessary mayoral election. Burnham expressed disappointment, saying: "The fact that the media was informed of the NEC decision before I was tells you everything you need to know about the way the Labour Party is being run these days."
