Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has dismissed speculation about changes to the capital gains tax (CGT) discount, asserting that the upcoming federal budget is designed to assist young Australians in purchasing homes.
Albanese Addresses CGT Concerns
Speaking at an event in western Sydney on Friday, Albanese responded to media reports suggesting that the 50% CGT discount might be reduced. He stated that such speculation is unfounded and that the budget measures will focus on supporting aspiration.
“I know there’s been a bit of speculation, all of it wrong. When people see what we’re actually going to do in the budget, people will be able to make their own assessments, but I can assure you that it is aimed firmly and squarely at aspiration,” Albanese said, as reported by AAP.
Young Australians and Economic Trust
The Prime Minister emphasised that many young people feel the current system works against them, eroding trust in both the economy and democracy. He argued that the budget would address these concerns by making homeownership more attainable.
Media speculation has centred on a possible reversion of the 50% CGT discount to the pre-1999 regime, which taxed real gains on assets adjusted for inflation. However, Albanese refrained from providing specific details, urging the public to wait for the official budget announcement.
