The Metropolitan Police arrested 12 protesters during a heated pro-Palestinian demonstration in Parliament Square on Wednesday. The event, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, saw hundreds gather to demand the UK government take stronger action against Israel's military operations in Gaza.
Officers intervened when a splinter group attempted to breach security barriers near the Houses of Parliament. Scotland Yard confirmed those arrested faced charges including breach of peace and obstruction of a highway.
Growing Tensions in Westminster
The protest marks the third major gathering this month as international pressure mounts over the Gaza humanitarian crisis. Chants of "Free Palestine" and "UK complicity kills" echoed across the square, with some demonstrators waving banners accusing the government of "arming genocide".
A police spokesperson stated: "While we respect the right to peaceful protest, we will not tolerate disorder or attempts to disrupt parliamentary business." Authorities maintained a significant presence throughout the four-hour demonstration.
Political Fallout
The event comes amid growing divisions in Westminster, with over 50 MPs having called for an immediate ceasefire. Shadow ministers joined backbench rebels this week in challenging the government's position on arms sales to Israel.
Protest organisers vowed to continue demonstrations until policy changes, warning: "This movement won't stop until our leaders stop enabling war crimes." Further rallies are planned outside Downing Street this weekend.
