The New York political scene has been rocked by tragedy after Petros Krommidas, the 49-year-old son of a prominent Greek shipping magnate, was found dead in a swimming pool at a luxury Long Island property.
Mr Krommidas, who was standing as a candidate in upcoming local elections, was discovered in the pool at his father's multi-million dollar estate in upscale Brookville on Tuesday afternoon.
Political Ambitions Cut Short
The shocking discovery comes just days before residents were due to vote in local elections where Krommidas was campaigning for a position. Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 3:30 PM, but despite their efforts, they were unable to revive him.
Nassau County Police have confirmed they are treating the death as non-suspicious and do not believe foul play was involved. A police spokesperson stated: "The investigation is ongoing, but initial findings suggest this was a tragic accident."
Wealthy Background and Family Business
Petros was the son of Vassilis Krommidas, a successful Greek shipping executive who had established himself in New York's elite circles. The family owns a substantial shipping enterprise with global operations, placing them among the wealthier families in the Greek diaspora community.
The Brookville property where the tragedy occurred is situated in one of Long Island's most exclusive neighbourhoods, known for its sprawling estates and high-profile residents. The area has been the scene of numerous celebrity and wealthy family incidents over the years.
Community in Shock
Local residents and political opponents have expressed their shock and condolences. One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, told reporters: "Petros was a familiar face in the community. He was actively campaigning and seemed enthusiastic about serving the public. This is absolutely devastating news."
Election officials have confirmed that Krommidas's name will remain on the ballot for the upcoming election, though campaigning in his district has effectively ceased as the community comes to terms with the sudden loss.
The medical examiner's office is conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, with results expected in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Krommidas family has requested privacy as they grieve their unexpected loss.
