A woman has sparked debate after criticizing her friend's choice of baby name, warning that the unconventional spelling could lead to a lifetime of difficulties for the child.
Unusual Name Choice
The 21-year-old woman took to Reddit to share her concerns about her friend Loreen, 22, who recently gave birth to a daughter. The parents decided to name the baby Ghiuliyette, pronounced Juliet, with the middle name Mahriya. The woman admitted she initially thought the spelling was a joke.
She said: 'I told her that spelling a simple but beautiful name like that is just going to ruin that little girl's life. She got mad and told me to stop ruining her mood and that I was being mean.'
While she has no issue with the name Juliet itself, she believes the spelling choice will create problems for the child in both childhood and adulthood.
Friend's Reaction
The friend reacted furiously, accusing the woman of making fun of the baby's name. She told the woman to stop texting her and called her a bad friend. The baby's father also emailed the woman, asking her to stop being disrespectful and insisting the spelling makes the name 'unique'.
Despite standing by her opinion, the woman admitted she may have taken things too far and asked online: 'Am I the asshole for telling my friend that the name she gave her daughter is bad and will ruin her life?'
Online Reactions
Commenters on the post largely supported the woman's concerns. One user, a high school teacher, noted: 'Kids with messed up spellings of their names are miserable most of the time. People constantly mispronounce them and official documents become a nightmare.'
Another added: 'People forget babies grow into adults. Imagine having to put that name on a CV for the rest of your life.'
