Top tennis players are set to continue their protests over prize money distribution at Wimbledon, after a similar action at the French Open. The players, from both the men's and women's tours, will limit their media duties during the first week of the championships, from 29 June to 5 July.
The dispute stems from a joint letter sent to grand slam organisers requesting a greater share of revenues, contributions to player welfare funds, and the formation of a grand slam player committee. After a year of little progress, the players initiated a boycott of non-mandatory media obligations at the French Open.
Wimbledon had hoped to avoid confrontation, announcing a record 20% prize money increase to £64.2 million. However, the player group, which had pushed for £71 million, noted that the revenue share remains at 14.4%, short of their 16% target.
Player representatives have pledged to extend the protest from the pre-tournament media day on Saturday through the first week of the championships. The action will include limiting post-match media duties during the event.
