The cast and experts behind Channel 4's 'Virgin Island' have hit back at critics who labelled the show 'exploitative', speaking on the red carpet at the BAFTA TV Awards. The series, which follows 12 adult virgins exploring intimacy in a controlled environment, was nominated in the reality category but lost to 'Celebrity Traitors'.
Sex and relationship coach Celeste Hirschman defended the programme, stating: 'The proof is in the pudding! The transformations are unbelievable, and in the second season as well!' Dr Danielle Harel echoed her sentiments, acknowledging initial discomfort but insisting viewers will 'understand why it’s so important' once they see the results.
The experts revealed that 'hundreds and hundreds' applied for season two, with participants arriving more prepared. Hirschman teased a BDSM specialist in episode five, while Harel noted contestants were 'ready to move faster' this time around.
Former contestant Emma shared her personal breakthrough: 'Well, I lost my virginity, so that’s an update... I’ve built so much more confidence and opened up so many more doors.' She credited the experts for her 'self-love journey' in Australia, where she became intimate six months after filming.
Another participant, Jason Thompson, proudly displayed a bejewelled cherry pin on his suit, declaring: 'I’m still a virgin, cherry is still intact. I love myself again... It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.'
