A former supporter of President Donald Trump has expressed his regret for voting for him, calling him the 'worst president we’ve ever had' and a 'con man' who 'doesn’t even try to hide his corruption anymore'. The caller, who identified himself as Thomas from Hawaii, told C-SPAN that he voted for Trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024, but now believes he made a mistake.
Thomas said he had long wanted to believe Trump was 'the real deal', despite harbouring doubts about his business record. 'Now I regret my support for him, and I should’ve known better,' he said. 'He’s making it plain as day. He’s a con man, a liar, doesn’t keep his promises. He’s in office all for himself and he doesn’t even try to hide his corruption anymore.'
The caller described his disillusionment as a gradual process rather than a single event. 'I don’t think it’s one thing, it’s been a cumulative process,' he explained. 'It’s gotten so blatant now… He was gonna lower prices on day one, he was gonna do this on day one, only he could fix this stuff.'
When asked what could be done, Thomas suggested voting for Democrats to restore balance. 'Right now, the only weapon is to vote for as many democrats, whether you like them or not. Just to get some balance back into our system of checks and balances,' he added.
Recent polls indicate Trump faces historically low approval ratings, particularly on inflation. A Reuters/Ipsos survey found only 21 per cent of Americans approve of his handling of inflation, while a Fox News poll gave him 28 per cent approval on the issue. An Associated Press-NORC poll showed his overall economic approval dropped from 38 per cent in March to 30 per cent in April.
