Donald Trump is reportedly backing FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next United Nations Secretary-General after forming a close alliance during the recent World Cup. The President of the United States is said to have given Infantino his support for the position, with current Secretary-General Antonio Guterres set to stand down at the end of December 2026. Guterres has held the role for nine years, while Infantino has been in charge of FIFA since 2016.
Trump's View on Infantino
Trump reportedly views Infantino as a unifying figure with worldwide credibility after years collaborating with football leagues, World Cup national federations, and leading sponsors, and regards him as perfectly suited, according to the New York Post. Trump's backing for Infantino strengthened after the 2026 World Cup concluded, following the pair being spotted together during the tournament's closing stages. Infantino could still pursue a fourth term as FIFA President when his present mandate expires in 2027.
World Cup Success and Praise
"The World Cup turned out to be a spectacular SUCCESS!" Trump wrote on Truth Social after Spain beat Argentina in the final. He thanked law enforcement and others who helped, and gave special praise to Andrew Giuliani and Infantino. "Few people will ever be able to accomplish what he has done in elevating the World Cup to a level that nobody thought was possible." Trump was spotted alongside Infantino for the World Cup final clash between Spain and Argentina, causing a scene during Spain's trophy and medal ceremony.
Appointment Process and Hurdles
However, the US President cannot simply install Infantino in the Secretary-General role. Under Article 97 of the UN Charter, the Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly on the basis of a recommendation from the Security Council. A member state must first put forward a candidate, before undergoing public questioning and Security Council straw polls ahead of any formal recommendation. The principal hurdle is securing at least nine Security Council votes while avoiding a veto from any of the five permanent members: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, or China. Trump is able to campaign and attempt to wield his influence should he choose to pursue it following the New York Post report.
Controversy and Allegations
Their relationship attracted further scrutiny after Trump contacted Infantino prior to FIFA suspending US striker Folarin Balogun's red card ahead of the Round of 16 clash against Belgium. The ruling prompted fresh allegations of corruption, though FIFA maintained that Trump's involvement had no bearing on the outcome. Reports indicated that FIFA Disciplinary Committee chairman Mohammad al-Kamali allegedly took the decision without consultation from the remaining 18 members. The 2026 World Cup final achieved a record-breaking 62.8 million TV viewers. The tournament generated $15.2 billion in revenue, both representing all-time highs.
