Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) is rapidly dismantling federal agencies, seizing control of computer systems and accessing sensitive data, according to a review of staffers. The team consists of wealthy executives, far-right ideologues and young engineers, many from Musk’s own companies.
At the Treasury, General Services Administration and USAid, Doge members have gained access to payment systems and personal information of millions of Americans. They are working to shut down USAid, the world’s largest supplier of humanitarian aid, and have been spotted at the CDC, Department of Education and NIH.
Doge has not released staff details. Staff are technically “special government employees”, allowing them to avoid ethics and financial disclosures. A lawsuit claims they withheld surnames during interviews to avoid media scrutiny. Musk shared a letter from the Washington DC federal prosecutor promising legal action against anyone impeding their work.
Steve Davis, president of Musk’s Boring Company, is a key figure. He allegedly threatened to bring in US marshals when USAid officials blocked access to restricted areas. Under Davis, Boring Company faced safety violations; OSHA found workers burned by chemical accelerants, and former employees described a breakneck pace where workers “consistently flirted with death”.
Musk directs Doge’s day-to-day operations personally, according to sources. President Trump praised the team but said he has not met them. Doge operates from the White House with high independence.
