Tom Hardy's abrupt departure from the crime drama MobLand is set to cost producers millions of pounds, as they are forced to reshoot the second series finale. The 48-year-old actor will not return for the third series following reported clashes with producers, leaving the show's creators scrambling to rewrite the ending.
According to sources, the role of Harry Da Souza is pivotal to the storyline, meaning his absence cannot simply be ignored. An insider told The Sun: "That means they will have to alter the end of the second series, which has only just been made – and that will cost millions in extra time spent developing, filming and editing." It remains unclear whether Hardy will return to film new scenes or if producers will rely on creative editing to resolve the plot.
The exit follows reports of a "furious bust-up" with producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser. Matthew Belloni, former editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter, wrote in the Puck newsletter: "I'm told Paramount recently opted not to pick up Hardy for season three after his clashes with producers... during the recent production of season two."
Hardy had previously hinted at needing a break from acting due to physical strain. In an interview with Esquire UK, he said: "I've had two knee surgeries now, my disc's herniated in my back. I've got sciatica as well... It's all falling to bits now."
Despite the tensions, co-star Dame Helen Mirren showed support on Instagram, writing: "Love you now and always, Helen." Representatives for Hardy and Paramount+ have been approached for comment.
