A theatre in Devon has cancelled a performance by comedian Roy 'Chubby' Brown, citing that the show does not promote 'inclusion'. The 81-year-old comic, whose real name is Royston Vasey, was scheduled to perform at Exmouth Pavilion on August 21 as part of his 'No Offence Meant' tour. However, he announced on Tuesday that the theatre had informed him the show 'no longer aligns with the organisation's long-term strategic direction'.
Background on the Comedian
Vasey has been a fixture on the comedy circuit since the 1960s, known for his trademark leather flying helmet and goggles. His humour has always divided opinion, with critics deeming it outdated and reliant on offensive, expletive-ridden sexual material. Supporters argue it is working-class honesty not meant for the easily offended. His tour posters warn 'those easily offended, please stay away' and restrict attendance to those over 18.
The Cancellation Decision
Last month, Exmouth Pavilion's official Facebook page advertised the performance, stating it was 'adult comedy and not intended to offend'. But the new management later decided to cancel. In a statement on his social media, Vasey expressed frustration: 'Unfortunately, the Exmouth Pavilion's new management informed us late Friday night by email that they would be cancelling Roy's planned performance. The explanation was, and I quote, 'This show no longer aligns with the organisation's long-term strategic direction'.' He questioned why the contracted booking was not honoured and criticised the timing, noting tickets had been sold and travel plans likely made. He added that discussions with theatre management failed to reverse the decision.
A spokesman from LED Community Leisure, which runs the pavilion, explained: 'As a public community venue, Exmouth Pavilion exists to promote culture, the arts and freedom of expression. We recognise this decision will cause disappointment and inconvenience, and we are sorry for that. As a charitable operator of public spaces, LED's role is to carefully balance artistic freedom with our responsibility to promote inclusion, wellbeing and community cohesion.'
Alternative Venue in Torquay
While Exmouth has cancelled, another Devon seaside town is welcoming Brown. Babbacombe Theatre in Torquay confirmed he will perform there on August 20 at 7:30pm. The theatre stated: 'We're aware that a Devon venue has recently cancelled a scheduled date of Roy Chubby Brown's show. For those hoping to see the show, we're pleased to confirm that Roy will still be performing at the Babbacombe Theatre. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the region to enjoy the unique, no-holds-barred humour Roy is renowned for. Please note: this performance is strictly for audiences aged 16+ and may not be suitable for those easily offended. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.'
