Tess Daly reportedly expressed a desire to take a 'selfish' gap year before announcing her separation from husband Vernon Kay. The former Strictly Come Dancing presenter, 57, and the radio host, 52, revealed on Friday that they had decided to part ways after almost 23 years of marriage.
According to a source, Tess, who has two daughters with Vernon, wanted to travel for a whole year after leaving Strictly. The source told Closer magazine: 'Tess always put Vernon and the girls first and now she wants to be a bit selfish and make the most of their situation and her new-found freedom.'
The insider added that Tess, who has been working since her teens, felt she had missed out on travel opportunities. However, Vernon, who hosts a Radio 2 show, could only commit to trips of a few weeks at a time. The couple are said to be on amicable terms, with a source close to them telling The Mirror: 'They are both in a really good place about the decision.'
Tess and Vernon met in 2001 while working in television and married two years later. In a joint Instagram statement, they confirmed the split, emphasising that it was amicable and that they remain committed to co-parenting their daughters. They also stated that no third parties were involved in the decision.
