Oliver Fawkes, 21, was found dead in woodland near his family home in West Bilney, Norfolk, on November 25, 2025. An inquest at Norfolk Coroner's Court ruled his death a suicide by hanging, following side effects from a prescribed medication.
Mr Fawkes, a computer science student at the University of East Anglia, had been suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis and hair loss. He was dissatisfied with topical treatments offered by his GP and turned to the digital healthcare provider Manual, operated by Menwell. He began taking oral minoxidil in July 2024 and started finasteride in October 2024.
Finasteride has been linked to suicidal thoughts and depression, though these side effects are considered rare. Manual patients are urged to stop taking the medication if such symptoms occur, but Mr Fawkes continued, placing his last order for a six-month supply on October 6, 2025.
His mother described him as a 'unique person' who excelled in his studies and had been offered the chance to complete a PhD. On the day before his death, he told his brother he was going for a walk to watch the sunset and never returned. His body was found by a neighbour the following morning.
Menwell's chief medical officer said Mr Fawkes did not report any side effects or mental health issues. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has reviewed evidence for finasteride, noting 19 suicides and 170 reports of suicidal thoughts related to the medication between 1994 and May 31, 2025. The agency said it will update product information and warnings.
