Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has paid tribute to former MI6 chief Sir Alex Younger following his death at the age of 62, describing his life and career as exemplary.

In a statement, the Prime Minister expressed his sadness at the news, saying: 'I was saddened to learn of the news of the death of Sir Alex Younger. Sir Alex Younger led an exemplary life and career, ultimately serving as chief of the Secret Intelligence Service from 2014 to 2020.'

Starmer highlighted Younger's dedication to public service and national security, adding: 'He will be remembered by the many ministers, colleagues, friends and family for his utmost dedication to British public life and protecting our nation.'

The Prime Minister concluded by offering his condolences to Younger's family, stating: 'My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.'

Sir Alex Younger served as the head of MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service, for six years until his retirement in 2020. He was widely respected for his leadership during a period of significant global challenges, including the rise of cyber threats and international terrorism.

Younger's career in intelligence spanned over three decades, during which he held various senior roles both domestically and overseas. His contributions to national security were recognised with a knighthood in 2018.
