A mother who survived a brutal stabbing by her ex-partner says she feels 'cheated' after he died in prison before being sentenced. Lynn Carrington, 60, was attacked by Lloyd Brian Twells, 67, at her home in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, in June last year.
The Attack
Twells chased Carrington through her home with a knife, stabbing her in the neck and repeatedly trying to strike again. Carrington lost 2.7 litres of blood and underwent 14 hours of emergency surgery. She said she thought she would die during the attack, which left her with lasting physical and mental scars.
Conviction and Death
Twells was convicted of attempted murder at Nottingham Crown Court in December. However, he died of bladder cancer in custody just a week before he was due to be sentenced. Carrington expressed frustration that he 'got away with it' and that she has no closure.
Victim's Reaction
'I feel like I've gone through a nightmare and nobody's paying at the end,' Carrington said. 'He died in hospital, not in prison. I thought I'd get closure but it's all up in the air now.' She added that her mental health has suffered, and she suffers from flashbacks and fear of being alone.
Details of the Incident
On June 27, Carrington tried to hug Twells, but he stabbed her in the neck. He chased her through the house, shouting threats. She grabbed the blade, cutting her hand. Twells also threatened to kill her dog before stabbing himself in the arm. After a pause, he retrieved the knife and attacked again, forcing Carrington to seize it and get it stuck in her hand.
Her daughter Kayleigh found her bleeding and helped her to a neighbour's garden. Carrington pulled the knife from her own hand before paramedics arrived. At Queen's Medical Centre, doctors accidentally dislodged a blood clot during treatment, nearly causing her death. Medics said she would have died if she had lost another 300 millilitres of blood.
Aftermath
Carrington still has no feeling in her thumb and a scar on her other hand, while the neck wound has healed. She requires yearly thyroid checks. Twells claimed in court that a voice named Jenny told him he could not take his own life without taking hers.
