Southampton’s appeal against their expulsion from the Championship playoff final has been dismissed by an English Football League arbitration panel. The ruling means Middlesbrough will contest Saturday’s Wembley showpiece against Hull City, while Southampton’s original sanction of a four-point deduction next season was confirmed.
The verdict leaves the position of Southampton’s manager, Tonda Eckert, seemingly untenable. The 33-year-old German faces the sack, while club directors are confronting the anger of players who have missed out on potential promotion bonuses and wage increases.
In a statement released after the decision was announced, Southampton described the outcome as “extremely disappointing” and apologised again to supporters, players, staff and the wider community. The club acknowledged the seriousness of the matter but maintained the original sporting sanction was disproportionate, a view it said was widely shared in the football community. It also promised to provide information on ticket refunds for those who had bought tickets for Wembley.
Before the hearing, Southampton’s chief executive, Phil Parsons, argued the punishment was “manifestly disproportionate” compared with previous cases, citing a £200,000 fine given to Leeds for a similar spying offence in 2019. However, he did not mention that EFL anti-espionage rules have been tightened since then, nor did he reference the 2024 case of Bev Priestman, the former Canada Women’s head coach banned for 12 months by Fifa after a drone spying operation at the Paris Olympics.
Southampton had admitted to spying on training sessions of Oxford in December, Ipswich in April, and Middlesbrough this month. The disciplinary commission originally expelled the club from the playoffs and reinstated Middlesbrough, a decision now upheld on appeal.
