Southampton Boss Storms Out as Boro Boss Slams 'Cheats'

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert cut short his post-match press conference on Saturday amid tense scenes, following allegations that a Saints employee filmed Middlesbrough's training session. The controversy erupted ahead of the Championship play-off semi-final first leg, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Eckert's Brief Response

Eckert, who had little to say in his pre-match interview, referred to the club's statement from Friday evening. When pressed by journalists, he stated: "I think the club made a statement yesterday evening. I think that's all there is to say at the moment." He added: "I think we can talk about this and I know that these questions are coming up, but I think we shouldn't get distracted by the importance of those two big games." The press officer then ended the conference, and both left the room.

Hellberg's Accusation

Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg did not hold back in his own press conference, branding the Saints "cheats." The 38-year-old said: "It's a weird situation. Couldn't believe my eyes or ears when heard it, couldn't believe it when someone told me for the second time or the third. But if someone makes decisions to go and try to cheat, that's clear and it will be interesting to see what happens with that."

EFL Charges

The EFL has charged Southampton with breaches of regulations following a complaint from Middlesbrough. An EFL statement read: "Southampton Football Club has today been charged with a breach of EFL Regulations, and the matter will be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission." The charges relate to Regulation 3.4, requiring clubs to act with utmost good faith, and Regulation 127, which prohibits observing another club's training session within 72 hours of a match. Southampton has 14 days to respond, but the EFL will seek an expedited hearing.

The second leg is scheduled for Tuesday night, with the winner advancing to the play-off final at Wembley Stadium against either Hull City or Millwall, who also drew 0-0 in their first leg.
