Secret Service Review: Gemma Arterton's Spy Drama Is Solemn, Not Fun
Secret Service Review: Arterton's Spy Drama Is Solemn

Another week brings another glossy espionage drama, as ITV's Secret Service joins the ranks of agitated politicos scouring corridors of power. But does it offer anything fresh? Adapted by ITV news anchor Tom Bradby and Jemma Kennedy from Bradby's 2019 novel, this five-part series follows MI6 agent Kate Henderson (Gemma Arterton) as she power-walks through a thriller packed with cliches.

A Serious Drama with a Serious Message

Kate Henderson juggles family life with her secret job, infiltrating the Malta base of Russian oligarch Igor Borodin (Miglen Mirtchev). She and her team discover a cabinet member may be a Russian asset. Meanwhile, a leadership contest ensues after the PM's resignation, with candidates including home secretary Imogen Conrad (Amaka Okafor) and foreign secretary Ryan Walker (Mark Stanley). Walker's dubious activities raise suspicions: is he the mole?

Secret Service is not, in any conceivable way, fun. It lacks tension-puncturing banter or smart digs at real-world government. Even saucy moments—a flirtatious double agent, a sex tape—are delivered solemnly. ITV markets it as a serious drama with a serious message about global skulduggery and national security.

Performances and Pacing

Roger Allam shines as MI6 boss Sir Alan Brabazon, proving his presence benefits any show. Rafe Spall plays Henderson's put-upon husband, and Rochenda Sandall portrays a Downing Street aide caught in corruption. Despite offering nothing new, the series is confidently paced and slickly directed by Oscar-winner James Marsh, with enough big events (murder, guns) to keep it ticking.

If you dislike its stiff-jawed approach, worry not—another glossy spy drama will arrive next week. Secret Service airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
