Scottish Greens Pledge Inquiry into Trump Golf Funding

The Scottish Greens have announced plans to launch a formal inquiry into the funding of Donald Trump's golf courses in Scotland, should they emerge victorious in the upcoming election. The party has previously advocated for an Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO) to scrutinise the acquisition of Trump's facilities in South Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire.

Patrick Harvie's Strong Condemnation

Patrick Harvie, the party's external affairs spokesman, delivered a scathing critique of the former US president, stating that Trump "should never have been allowed to treat Scotland as his personal playground." Harvie described Trump as a "convicted fraudster, a racist and a war criminal" and criticised both the Scottish and UK governments for "fawning over" him while ignoring calls for transparency regarding his wealth.

Previous Calls for Action

The Greens' comments follow a suggestion from Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party in England and Wales, who proposed that Trump's golf courses should be stripped from him using international sanctions. The Scottish Greens' pledge represents a renewed push for accountability, aiming to uncover the true sources of funding behind Trump's Scottish ventures.

If elected, the party intends to use parliamentary mechanisms to compel disclosure of financial records related to the golf courses, which have been a source of controversy since their development. The inquiry would seek to determine whether any illicit funds or improper financial practices were involved in the establishment and operation of these properties.
