Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SVR, has accused Britain of masterminding a Ukrainian drone attack on the Sevastopol Defence Museum in Crimea, alleging that London is seeking revenge for the 1854 Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. The SVR claimed that British specialists uploaded flight missions to Ukrainian weapon systems, and that the Ukrainians were unaware of the true objective. The museum, which depicts the heroic defence of Sevastopol during the Crimean War of 1853–1856, was struck last month. The SVR stated that the attack was an attempt to destroy evidence of Russian heroism and that London perceives the Ukraine conflict as revenge for a 19th-century defeat.
SVR's Bizarre Allegations
According to the SVR, the drone strike targeted the Sevastopol Defence Museum, which holds no military installations nearby. The agency claimed that the British, driven by pride and historical grievances, sought to avenge the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. In that battle, about 110 of 670 British cavalrymen were killed and 160 wounded by Russian artillery. The SVR warned that London would have to answer for this attack and other "barbaric crimes" against the peoples of Russia and Ukraine.
Crimea Blackout and Ukrainian Strikes
On Monday, July 6, Crimea experienced a total blackout due to Ukrainian strikes on power stations. The destruction of bridges and ferries is also limiting access to the Black Sea peninsula. This comes as Ukrainian forces continue to target Russian occupiers in annexed Crimea, chipping away at President Vladimir Putin's control.
Historical Context and Reactions
The Crimean War ended with Russia's defeat in 1856 under the Treaty of Paris. The conflict also brought Florence Nightingale to prominence for her nursing reforms. Pro-Kremlin historian Pavel Danilin claimed that revenge for the Light Brigade burns in British hearts. However, a Western source dismissed the SVR's allegations as nonsense, saying, "He's losing the plot." The SVR is headed by Sergey Naryshkin, a close Putin ally known for conspiracy theories.
