New details have emerged about the car crash that injured former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, revealing that he had stopped to help a woman involved in a domestic violence incident moments before the collision.
The 81-year-old was travelling southbound on Interstate 93 in Manchester, New Hampshire, on 30 August when a woman flagged down his vehicle. His spokesperson, Ted Goodman, who was driving, reported the incident to police just after 9pm, and both men stayed at the scene until state troopers arrived.
After speaking with officers, they rejoined the motorway heading northbound. Shortly before 10pm, their Ford Bronco was rear-ended by a car driven by 19-year-old Lauren Kemp. Police said they believe Kemp had no connection to the earlier domestic violence incident, but that whether distraction or curiosity about the scene was a factor remains under investigation.
Giuliani suffered a fractured thoracic vertebra and multiple lacerations. He was taken to hospital along with Goodman and Kemp, all with non-life-threatening injuries. Giuliani was discharged on Monday afternoon, telling a friend: "I have some healing to do, but I'm otherwise in great shape."
Hours before the crash, Giuliani had attended a minor league baseball game. His security head said he was "eager to return to business." The crash came as President Donald Trump announced he would award Giuliani the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling him "the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City."
