Richard Madeley Kicked Out of El Salvador Mega-Prison After 15 Minutes
Richard Madeley Ousted from Mega-Prison in 15 Minutes

Richard Madeley's documentary inside El Salvador's mega-prison came to an abrupt end last night as the Good Morning Britain star was kicked out by the prison director, Belarmino Garcia, after just 15 minutes inside.

While asking about prison conditions at Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT), the enormous maximum security prison in El Salvador, he was told to stop filming. He was taken to a side room and revealed in a voiceover: "The pace suddenly quickens so perhaps asking about conditions here is pushing too far. I think I may have overstepped the mark." Richard and the Channel 5 crew were quickly escorted out of the prison.

The documentary revealed that the living conditions include bright lights which are on 24/7, no activities or books or hobbies besides reading the Bible, identical meals daily, and no hot water. The project is titled Richard Madeley: Inside the World's Mega Prison and sees the presenter, 70, enter a dangerous landscape and interview men who have committed torture and murder in the biggest prison in the world.

Some viewers found the documentary entertaining, as the journalist attempted to uncover whether an "ultra-tough approach to violent crime could ever be acceptable in the UK" or if this extreme solution was singular to the gang violence in El Salvador. However, others compared Richard to Steve Coogan's character, the inept broadcaster Alan Partridge.

"Watching Richard Madeley in one of the worlds strictest prisons. Absolutely fascinating documentary. He reminds me of the real Alan Partridge," said one viewer on X. "Richard Madeley is more Partridge than Partridge," said another.

One scene that particularly captured the attention of audiences was when Richard exclaimed "holy cow!" after being shown a murder. "Did Richard Madeley just say 'holy cow' while being shown an actual murder? He's such a k**b, couldn't they find someone else?!? He's more Alan Partridge than Alan Partridge!!! #insidethemegaprison," said another. "Just finished watching #insidethemegaprison on Channel 5. My favourite part was Richard Madeley uttering 'holy cow', when being shown a video of a literal murder. More Partridge than Partridge himself," yet another added.

In advance of the series launch, Richard commented that he was delighted to have been asked to partake and called his experience 'fascinating': "I was genuinely thrilled to be asked to front this film for 5. It's not every day you're given the chance to step inside a place as extraordinary and talked about as CECOT. What struck me straight away was the sheer scale of it, and the stories behind it. In meeting the people who run the prison and those living inside it, what unfolds is a fascinating and often surprising look at justice, security and the human realities behind the headlines. It's been a remarkable experience."

Richard Madeley: Inside the World's Mega Prison is available to stream on 5 now.
